Who knew these old boats were so cool!?!
I packed a swim suit, towel, sunscreen and other beach essentials
for the day. We drove from Richmond to Newport News. The drive
was long and well, pretty boring. I expected as much so I
took a book along.
The
huge, modern looking Museum sat on a beautiful wooded estate.
It looked funky but the comtemporary building contrasted nicely
with the lake setting.
We entered and got the TimeTravelers discount - half price
for the whole family! We decided to go ahead and take the
guided tour. The best parts by far were the huge prism light
that once was part of the lighthouse at Cape Charles and an
enormous gold eagle, the figurehead from an ocean-going ship.
There were artifacts found in sunken ships, old maps, a collection
of very intricate model ships and real boats as well. There
was an area that showed things about European explorers. There
were Renaissance artifacts and many things so interesting,
you just can't stop staring!
You might want to wait to visit this museum because a cool
pirate exhibit will be starting on August 30. It's called
Under the Black Flag -- Life Among the Pirates.
So, if you like ships, water and anything nautical, pack your
beach stuff and head to the Mariners' Museum. Then, like me,
go on to Virginia Beach from there. The swimming was great,
the waves were huge and I had a really fun time!
