Old Town Alexandria on the Potomac
My
mom and I got a late start as we headed out 100 miles to Old
Town Alexandria, Virginia. When we arrived we had a time looking
for a place to park! We found a good spot right near the Torpedo
Factory Arts Center. Now, if you've never been here before
you're missing out on a lot! The Torpedo Factory used to make
(duh!) torpedos. Now it is a place where artists go to make
and sell their products. They have the neatest pottery, paintings
and scupltures, a cool musem shop and an old (huge!) torpedo
on display! The neatest thing though, is the Alexandria Archaeology
Museum. This is where I Time Traveled!
The Archaeology Musem is located inside the Torpedo Factory.
I arrived at this free musem right as it opened. All over
I could see artifacts and information well written out in
glass cases. In one corner, there was a dummy "doing an Archaeology
dig". It named the tools archaeologists use and so on. In
other cases were artifacts such as pieces of broken pots,
glass bottles, silverware, and many other things dug up from
the past. There are even activities and projects for kids
to do. I learned how archaeology helps us know about the past.
Just like TimeTravelers.
Next
was lunch. My mom and I split a tuna sub at Deli on the Strand
then walked around King Street. It was really fun to walk
around on the cobble stone streets past the old brick town
houses. It's easy to imagine what it was like living there
200 years ago. The shops were really awesome, too, and so
was that sandwich! Though I didn't buy anything I wish I could
have! Some of the stores I went to were the Christmas Attic,
Funk and Junk, Mindful Hands, Why Not Shop, and a bunch of
others! It was real fun! I highly reccomend the shopping there.
The
last place I TimeTraveled was Gadsby's Tavern. Like Michie
Tavern, you can really eat there but we didn't. We took the
tour instead. The rooms were restored to look exactly like
they did in the 1700s. It really helped me understand what
life was like back then. Did you know that Thomas Jefferson
and George Washington both enjoyed a meal at Gadby's Tavern?
I didn't, and I think that's really cool.
Well, I only needed one last TimeTravelers stamp to qualify
for my T-shirt. But, Old Town Alexandria is so packed with
history, I wound up with one extra. Maybe I'll try for another
T-shirt. Who knows, I just might make it.
